Hertford Academy
Murfreesboro, North Carolina
One of the first historical restoration and preservation efforts in Murfreesboro, The Hertford Academy was built in 1811 and first welcomed students of Reverend Jonathan Otis. Harriet Sketchley (Mrs. James Banks) purchased it and opened a school for young ladies in 1822. Then in 1848, the Chowan Baptist Association purchased the school and created the Chowan Baptist Female Institute. The building was used until 1851, when the Columns Building was opened. The Murfreesboro Women’s Club saved the academy by acquiring it in 1947. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971. It is available to rent from the Murfreesboro Historical Association for receptions, weddings, and other special occasions.
